The Associated Press of Pakistan reports:
NEW DELHI, Sep 26 (APP): Hundreds of people were injured in different parts of India after violence erupted between Hindus and Muslims over India’s victory against Pakistan in Twenty20 Cricket World Cup. Media reports said the worst hit areas were Indian Capital, occupied Kashmir, Assam, Uttarkhand and Uttar Pradesh where Hindus attacked Muslims while celebrating the Indian victory. The police was resorted to fire in the air to disperse the mobs. More here.
The Telegraph in Calcutta adds:
The Bajrang Dal, VHP and the RSS held a victory march in Rajouri, Jammu, after the game, stoking Hindu-Muslim violence that has injured at least 20 people. Some drunken marchers allegedly shouted provocative slogans and burst crackers outside a mosque where Ramazan prayers were under way.In cosmopolitan Mumbai, some innocuous and some poor SMS jokes targeting Pakistanis did the rounds.
I said this earlier but I cannot help but say it again. If a mere verbal comment made by a cricket player can provoke ordinary people to react like this, then there has to be something fundamentally skewed in our psychology. And we really ought not to blame Shoaib for that. These blokes fighting on the streets, they can’t really be cricket “fans” now can they be? This reminds me of a post I wrote earlier in the year:

I think, the Indians played really very well to capture the T20 World Cup. Celebrations were deserved by the Indian Public, but it should have been without hurting the sentiments of others.
